Celebrities like Jessica Alba, Alicia Keys and Keanu Reeves are all experiencing great popularity, and fashion brands are constantly using racially ambiguous models in their ad campaigns. Is this current fixation with mixed race people entirely positive? When advertisements use multiracial models as metaphors for multiculturalism and tolerance, is that necessarily progressive? In this seminar, Carmen Van Kerckhove explores the ways in which mixed race people are represented and misrepresented in pop culture.
